I'm Not Drowning

Story Behind The Song

The first verse has a very emotional, sad feel to it and is sung to the person who might be reading this letter they have found, knowing the person they love has gone. It tells them although the reader/listenter may feel sad, really for the singer it is what they want and they feel leaving is for the best. The verse has several meanings to it, I think of how it feels to be in a relationship where you feel like you are drowning and out of your depth and perhaps you just don't want to fight the current anymore so rather than fight it you just let yourself go. And yet perhaps you feel happier to surrender and stop carrying on the fight. It also imagenes how you feel when you are out to see and waving at someone on the shore - how would the person on the shore know if you were in trouble or whether you were expressing your enjoyment? The second verse acts as a continuation of the letter/song but now focuses on the feelings of the singer, who is quite angry, perhaps with the whole world as she feels that none of her troubles / prayers have been answered and life has been a continual uphill struggle and in the end it was not worth fighting it anymore. The final verse acts as the end of the letter, I have used an analgy of the singer letting themselves be washed out to sea by the tide and the last two lines ask how things could have turned out differently under other circumstances, but now it is too late to do anything about it and the singer is leaving.

Song Description

This song describes the emotions behind a relationship that has nowhere left to go, but also goes deeper that that to liken the relationship to being washed out to sea and drowing - on one hand the person leaving knows they will leave a trail of sadness in their wake, but they are saying that they know in time the other person will move on. I have imagened the person singing this like it is a goodbye letter, or perhaps even sadder still, a suicide letter. However letter, though sad, in its refrain holds an air of poignancy as the singer says they want to say goodbye and this is the way they want to do it.

Lyrics

I am glad - it's what I wanted
I'm not sad to leave this place.
Don't you cry - your tears are wasted
Time goes by, you'll soon forget my face.

I'm not drowning, I am waving my goodbyes
I'm not drowning, we see the world through different eyes.

All your prayers are long forgotten.
Don't be scared, it's who I am.
Climb the stairs, each step rotten.
Problem shared? Well no one gives a damn.

I'm not drowning, I am waving my goodbyes
I'm not drowning, we see the world through different eyes.

The tide comes in - and so I go,
What might have been - you'll never know.

I'm not drowning, I am waving my goodbyes
I'm not drowning, we see the world through different eyes.
I'm not drowning, I am waving my goodbyes
I'm not drowning, we see the world through different eyes.
