He talked of getting bombed, attacked etc..... the song is also about a friend of his who died a week before he was supposed to return to the US. He was going to be a histroy teacher. So the bridge of the song talks about his funeral. The end of the song is the soldier saying "I'm gonna find a way to make it home."
