(The) Break of Gone

Story Behind The Song

RJ had the lyrical hook "Break of Gone" for about ten years. He asked me if I could do anything with it because he could never write the song (he's not really a lyric guy but it's a cool hook). I sat down and he strummed the guitar and the lyrics fell out of my head in about ten minutes. The story seemed to write itself for me. I sang a melody that fit the mood and the song was born.

Song Description

(The) Break of Gone is a story song about a couple who have had too many fights to count "nothing's left, nothing's right" and they're finally facing the end. The male in the song is facing "the break of gone" instead of the break of dawn. He waits for a cab to take him away from their life and wonders "was it there all along?"

(The) Break of Gone

(verse)
They?ve been up this long night
Nothing?s left, nothing?s right
She slammed the door and then he knew
They were never coming back
The line was crossed too fast, too far
She?ll get the house, the kid, the car
He?s got nothing to hold on to
But the break of a new day

(pre-chorus)
She?s still sleepin? in their room
He?s looking East, his heart?s got few
Answers to make sense of
The way things have gone wrong

(chorus)
Looking out the window, he?s staring at the break of gone

(verse)
Fifteen years go by so fast
You say the things you can?t get back
The words that make a house
Feel like a battle ground
She was in that pretty dress
Didn?t take a fool to guess
It wasn?t him she was thinking of
When she put that lipstick on

(pre-chorus)
House is still, he?s packing light
Kissed their little girl goodbye
The cab is waiting outside
Was it there all along?

(chorus)
Looking out the window, staring at the break of gone

(bridge)
Pulling on the interstate leaving love?s big mistake
Should?ve held on tighter, where did it all go wrong?

(pre-chorus)
Every mile that goes on by
Takes him further from that lie
Reminding him of a life where he don?t belong

(chorus)
Looking out the window, staring at the break of gone
