Darkness and Light

Story Behind The Song

A contrived piece of folk law depicting a battle between two brothers and their armies. The story is supposed to explain the transition between day and night. Originally day followed one brother and night followed the other. They were the children of the night sky and like all brothers were in constant conflict. The narrative begins with one wounded brother in a forest of willow. Shot through the side with a willow arrow, the forest weeps in protest against its part in the murder of the day, hence the weeping willow. The chorus sets the scene for the battle. ?Shadows draw low? for the day is right besides the night. The description of the wounded light takes place in the second verse and then the finale, a recollection of the battle itself. The blood of each brother runs into the earth and flows through its rivers creating the day and night as we know it. To be honest this poem is two dimensional. I intended it to be nothing more than a narrative. There is a cyclical nature in the idea of the suns continuity and the fact that the story is set in time immemorial gives it a nostalgic taste, so read into it what you will

Lyrics

A forest where an angel frets,
Where willows weep their sharp regrets,
In a clearing a solider lies.
World wearied vacuous eyes.

He speaks of war
Some mortal fight.
Between the brothers day and night.
A willow arrow speared his side
And from the wound
He takes the light.

Pre Chorus
Mother and father are
The night skies
The moon the stars.

Chorus
Shadows are drawing low,
Two soldiers stand below,
The seeds of rumour sowed
The fight between the day and night.

A garden where an angel holds
A shield coloured green and gold
And there as sure as candle flame.
In the dark a soldier cries the same.

He speaks of war
Some mortal fight.
Between the darkness and the light.
A jewelled dagger through his side
And from the wound he takes the night.

Repeat Chorus.
Perez, a dagger blow,
Night stumbles as he throws
Light wounded darkness grows,
Blood runs as black as crows
Last stand and arrow stowed.
Bow creeks as brother froze.
The wind, the whistle blows.
The fight between the day and Night.

The fight between the day and Night.
