Lyrics
There I stood, back to the wall. I watched as it went down.
Father James met Johnny Ray just on the edge of town.
Father James, he said 'Johnny Ray. I told you don't come round this way.
Johnny, boy, you best head on down the road.'
and he said, 'Roll. Roll on out of here.'
and he said, 'Roll. Like a wagon wheel you just roll.
Like a wagon wheel, you just roll'.
Well, Johnny weren't to be put down by a man of the cloth.
He knew as well as I that James' heart was far too soft.
Johnny drew and closed his eyes. I swear I heard him pray.
In a cloud of smoke he let one fly right into father James.
Father James fell to the ground. His pistol fell away.
It bounced across the dusty road until, at my feet, it lay.
I reached down onto the ground. I grabbed that gun and wheeled around.
I put six bullets into Johnny's chest.
I dropped the gun and I sat down. I's much too weak to stand.
James, he grabbed me by the arm and put the gun back in my hand.
and he said, 'Run so fast and run so far, and run till you can run no more,
and I thank you, but you must never come back here again.
and he said, 'Roll. Roll on out of here.'
and he said, 'Roll. Like a wagon wheel, you just roll.
Like a wagon wheel you just roll.
Like a wagon wheel you just roll.'
