Story Behind The Song
Soldier Blue was originally written based on the First World War which hallmarked a catastrophic loss of life as the methodology of war altered with the Industrial Revolution. Entire countries became bereft of men, who died quickly and in excessive numbers.
In the years since, it has become applicable to Western involvement in Middle East struggles. I wrote the song to highlight the truly personal consequences faced by the soldiers and their families while they carry out mandates issued by governments and kingdoms.
The numbers of loss may differ between these two wars, but no loss is ever felt less deeply by the individual who gives his life for his country and by his loved ones.
This production was done in the 80's, a new production is currently being worked on but this was submitted to make the deadline for this compilation.
It isn't really meant as a political statement but just as a reminder of what we lay down the line each time we take up our guns. As an ex-soldier, I ought to know.

Lyrics
Soldier Blue
Soldier Blue
Hear the call of your nation
Pick up your gun
March past crowds in celebration
And your mother cries cos' she knows
Don't fight for your country to die in the sands
You were sent over there to kill the other man
Soldier Blue
Soldier Blue
And so you go
A virgin for your king and country
Don't be afraid
She's had so many men before
And your mother cries
Don't fight for your country to die in the sands
You were sent over there to kill the other man
