Nobody He Has To Please

Story Behind The Song

The music came first...an happy accident because of playing another song wrong, but liking the chord progression. The inspiration was a Grizzly Adams kind of character who preferred living off the grid.

Song Description

A peaceful life can come in many forms, but often comes after a struggle to get there.

NOBODY HE HAS TO PLEASE

On the side of a mountain near the Cumberland Gap is a man who lives all alone.
He never worries 'bout no 'lectric bills or no automobiles, he's never had a phone.
There's a town about fifteen miles from his porch and he knows everybody there,
But when he's in for supplies, very few tell him "Hi", all they do is stand and stare.

(chorus)
He's as big as the country, and as gentle as the dew on the trees.
His backyard stretches the horizon, and there's nobody, nobody, nobody he has to please.

His pa was killed in a mine back in thirty-nine, but things like that just made him strong,
And then he went overseas, he served in Italy, where he learned that war was wrong.
He tried his hand at fast jivin', truck drivin' jobs for years.
Now everything is alright, he's got very few problems and even less fears.

(repeat chorus)

Every now and then a man craves a little lovin' when the sun goes down.
That's when he sells all the hides from the meals that he's trapped and takes the money and makes his rounds.
Down in Asheville he's got him a woman that he wines and dines several times a year.
She never understands just why he always leaves, but she's sure he'll always reappear.

(repeat chorus)
There ain't nobody,
Nobody he has to please.
