A Little Piece of Jesus

Story Behind The Song

One Sunday morning, my wife was fretting about being late for a 9AM service. I told her she would be just in time to get her "little piece of Jesus". The line stuck with me for a few days, and I started humming a little tune with it. My son was preparing for his First Communion at the time, and while helping him with his lessons, I added a few words to the song. A few days later, the whole thing came together. I originally had the song pegged for a "Creed type" rocker. A few months later, an old friend who is presently a music teacher, came over my house to visit. As he was about to leave, my wife mentioned that I should show him the lyrics. He brought them home and spent the next few days hammering out what you hear now. I did not envision a ballad, but I'm glad he did.

Song Description

A man feels that there is a piece of his life missing. Living a "good life" ( working hard, spending time with family) still leaves a void. He attends mass and confronts the image of Jesus as soon as he enters. He realizes during mass that the missing piece is Jesus. He receives the Eucharist and feels the body of Christ filling the void. He leaves church with a renewed sense of purpose and hope and will devote his time to helping others who felt the same as he did.

Lyrics

A LITTLE PIECE OF JESUS

VERSE 1
I live a good life? but there?s still something missing
Working all the time? to try and please my family
So I go and see the Lord? To see if maybe He could help me.
Walking through the door, I see Him staring at the floor.

CHORUS
A hole in my soul, I need a little piece of Jesus.
Every time I leave, I need to know that He is with me.
Everywhere I go, I take a little piece of Jesus.
A little piece of Jesus with me.

VERSE 2
I sing and I pray? I get down and beg forgiveness.
You showed us how to live? what can I do to thank You?
I take the bread of life? and feel Your spirit moving through me.
I cry and I cry, for the one they crucified.

CHORUS
A hole in my soul, I need a little piece of Jesus.
Every time I leave, I need to know that He is with me.
Everywhere I go, I take a little piece of Jesus.
A little piece of Jesus with me.

BRIDGE
Walking home that day? I know that the Lord is in* me. *(?with? on demo)
I feel it in my heart? I know that I am forgiven.
I need to spread the word? of the sacrifice of our savior.
I look up to the sky, and I thank You for my life.

(Guitar solo)
* You've given me the strenth: You've shown me the way

CHORUS
A hole in my soul, I need a little piece of Jesus.
Every time I leave, I need to know that He is with me.
Everywhere I go, I take a little piece of Jesus.
A little piece of Jesus with me.

*(this line omitted on demo)
