Daniel's Hands

Story Behind The Song

When my little boy was about 6 months old I was watching him one day when I realised that he was discovering the fact that his hands were actually attached to his arms and that he could do things with them and was in control - it was a profound moment.

Song Description

A mother tells her little boy what things he will be able to do with his hands over the period of his life. In doing so, she realises that her own mother and in turn, her grandmother etc, would have gone through exactly the same emotions. It's really a song about the great and powerful circle of life.

Daniel's Hands

music and lyrics: Tracey Roberts © 2002

I have a gorgeous little boy
With eyes of piercing blue
As I hold him in my arms I whisper
"I would die for you"
I watch him as he's learning new things everyday
And I realise that my mother felt the same way

Daniel holds his hands in front of his face
Spins them slowly round, fingers splayed
"Are these mine Mama? What will they do?"
Oh darling, the stories I could tell you

You'll splash in the water, and pick up coloured toys
Draw pictures of elephants and play games with other boys
You'll hold a drinking cup and learn to throw a ball
And brush your knees off when you've tripped and had a fall
You'll make paper aeroplanes and climb tall mountain trees
Learn to play an instrument, maybe tickle the ivories
And if you like to write you'll keep a diary
And one day, you'll read it, and know what I mean

Daniel holds his hands in front of his face
Spins them slowly round, fingers splayed
"Are these mine Mama? What will they do?"
Oh darling, the stories I could tell you

You'll turn the pages of your reading books for school
Dial the telephone number of a girl you think is cool
You'll type a hundred emails to your friends overseas
Work on your stereo and go shopping for CDs
You'll eat in restaurants and learn to drive a car
You'll shave your beard and see how handsome that you are
You'll touch a lover's face the way that you touch mine
And one day, you may have your own tiny child

Who could be a gorgeous little boy
With eyes of piercing blue
As you hold him in your arms you'll whisper
"I would die for you"
You'll watch him as he's learning new things everyday
And you'll realise that your mother
And her mother
And her mother
Felt the same way
