Not Open For Business Now

Story Behind The Song

A dear friend and prostitute is leaving town due to a new policy of a very active moral sweep clean. She is anxious about one client who relies on her emotionally as well as physically, and has formed a strong attachment to her.

Song Description

The song opens with "There's no light in my window", and this is because there have been local petitions, police patrolling certain areas more, no more metaphorical "lights in upstairs windows".The friend sees her client hanging around the town and in her street, waiting for her. But she is leaving, and trying to assure him he is strongert now, and will manage without her.

Lyrics

There's no light in my window,
why do you think I'm open for business, somehow?
Just don't hang around in the street like this,
I can't even kiss you, although I miss you,
I'm all closed up and out of touch......

CHORUS

So, why are you hoping, why are you waiting,
for me to still help you now.
For the times that I soothed you,
when your days were so blue,
understand, I can't be there now......

I can see you in the street,
you look around and shuffle feet,
still hang about the town.
But, I'm not open for business,
I won't even blow a swift kiss,
you are mistaken in your dreams

You are stronger than you think, not so desperate for our link
I don't think you need me, now.
You can make it like I will,
not just hang around -- 'till
someone else can give you some care.

I remember, with some fondness,
I comforted your lost bliss,
and I held you when you were all alone.
But, now, there's no light in my window,
cause I'm not open for business,
and I think that I will probably leave town....

CHORUS In the streets and the side-walks,
couples huddle in their talk,
but it doesn't lead to business, now.
So please hear what I'm saying,
this life is really fraying,
I can't keep you going anymore.

Now, move on Mr Punter, you've heard me, Mr Punter,
please move on and say goodbye. This street is closed for business,
petitions, police, too much risk, this street is closed for business now......

Blow a kiss for your pillow, when you dream, turn the lights low,
as the business you miss fades away.
when I'm far in the distance,
you must find some resistance,
cause I don't think that I'll come back this way.
I'm not open for business.,
no, not open for business,
not open for business now.

This song has potential to be something really good. The feel of the chords match the vocals. Chorus lines are more often than not the most important part of the song and in that sense, this song is on point.
