Workin' on a New One

Story Behind The Song

Matthew was sitting at home, looking at his messy front room and imagining what it would be like if his wife had just left him with their girls. He started writing a draft and it just flowed right out. He then took it to a brand new collaborator, Ryan Bennett Price, and Ryan came up with a couple of changes they agreed on with the lyrics with some musical ideas which were then sorted through by Ryan. The end result was a country acoustic version which will also be added to Broadjam - however, with Jeff Jacobs came a whole different take on the song. He recorded this version and it has much more ache in his weathered, bluesy voice. So far, this is Matthew's favorite of the two versions of the song.

Song Description

The song is about feeling sad regarding his wife leaving him with their two girls, but he's also a bit bitter, cause she took some meaningful things like his Mama's pearls and his jacket with the scent of him. She also took something even more meaningful to him you would think- his song-filled journals, and he just snickers, "hope you saw what you needed to see." It's his way of getting back at her really, this feeling of, you've left me with nothing but my talent so I'm gonna use that to my advantage and work on a new song.

Lyrics

I've been sittin' here in our front room
The curtains are open, I look outside
Boy that sun is layin' down some bright
And I'm on my second cup of coffee
Chasin' the right words for me to write
And I wanna finish by tonight

I'm workin' on a new one
I'm workin' on a new one
Cause it's all I know how to do
I'm workin' on a new one
I'm workin' on a new one
Cause I'm here alone & missin' you

You left home with our precious girls
No, you didn't forget my Momma's pearls
Took my jacket with the scent of me
Swiped my favorite sing-along vinyls
A couple of my song filled journals
Hope you see what you needed to see

Yeah I'm workin' on a new one
I'm workin' on a new one
Cause it's all I know how to do
I'm workin' on a new one
I'm workin' on a new one
Cause I'm here alone & missing you

I thought you & me had a lasting love
Father time would never have to test
Can't tell me I didn't give it my all
I put my effort in, girl I gave you my best
Tried so hard to make you happier than
You'd ever be with that salty man
But off you ran, off you ran

Cause you're there my dear
You took the kids & all my beer
Or I'd be workin' on a long neck bottle or two
Or maybe more than a few
Instead he's workin' on them with you
Yeah, while I'm in this messy front room
Workin' on a new one and feeling so blue

So blue..... So blue.... Oh so blue

Yeah I'm workin' on a new one
Workin' on a new one
I'm workin' on a new one
