Louisa

Story Behind The Song

Years ago, I had the privilege of touring with Louis Killen. Later in life, Louis moved back to England and became Louisa Jo Killen whose only regret was never getting a chance to develop a feminine voice. More recently, our friend, Brittyn, told me her story of having to face losing a voice she had spent most of her life developing for the stage, to become the person she always wanted to be. As a novice voice student, I was struck with the idea of having to give up the most precious thing you own to grow into the person you needed to be. The song ends with a bit of "Pleasant and Delightful" from Killen's singing.

Song Description

The story of two trans women and their voices. One decided to risk losing a trained theatrical voice to become the gender she always felt at home with and the other, an older traditional folk singer, who waited until it was too late to develop a feminine voice. The melody is original as are the words with an excerpt of a traditional song "Pleasant and Delightful" at the end

Lyrics

Somewhere on a bright sunny morning
When you're less than Three Score and Ten
Something way deep down inside you
Said you'd never live this way again

It's a tricky situation
On a cross or a stage
More than a course deviation
At any time or any age

Some had to give up their lovers
Some had to give up their friends
Some had to give up' their own voices
In order to find it again

It's a singsong, breathy melody
From your head not your chest
It's being who you're supposed to be
When you're singing your best

So on this bright, sunny morning
You know just what to do
Just like old William once wrote it
To thine own self be true

Some had to give up their lovers
Some had to give up their friends
Some had to give up' their own voices
In order to find it again

In order to find it again...

And the larks they sang melodious
And the larks they sang melodious
And the larks they sang melodious
At the dawning of the day
