Fade Away

Story Behind The Song

There is no particular story behind the song. Nothing conciously autobiogarphical. However, the notion of being "shown the door" in a relationship is something that we can all relate to . . . so there's a bit of "everyman" in here perhaps. As with many of the songs in the Martian Acres CD, this one took on a life of its own and alsmot seemed to write itself.

Song Description

Whimsical look at deciding when "the writing is on the wall" as far as "getting out of town" is concerned. There is an undertone of sadness and pathos . . . after all, the person who is the subject of the song has been rejected (probably rejected in love), and the implication is that he has been rejected more than once. He has money in his pocket, but he feels unwanted and he feels the need to move on.. This song depends very heavily on over-the-top metaphors, which add to its lighthearted soul. For example, " . . . if the best you can say is 'here's looking at you,' you clearly ain't likely to erect me a statue." So, it's sort of a mixed bag: Sad story.. Goofy, almost, comical language.

Lyrics

Fadeaway

Copyright 2003 by Bob Story and Dennis Wanebo

Verse One

Look Out
Don?t Look Back
When That Deck
You?re Drawing Into
Is Stacked,
You Gotta Stand Up
And Simply Walk Away.
(OR ... ?Slowly Walk Away.?)

Verse Two

Advice
Is Cheap at Best
But That?s Twice the Price
Of One Trip Out West
So I Think I?m
Going To Go
There Today

Verse Three

My Backpack
Is Fully Packed
But There Ain?t Quite Enough Inside
To Bring Me Back
So When I Go Out There
I?m Just Gonna
Stay

Chorus

My Last Paycheck
Is Burning in My Pocket,
Like Some Kind of Bottle Rocket
On my Soul
I Can?t Say Why I Stayed
And I Can?t Tell You How
I Got Delayed,
I Guess I Put a Little
Too Much Butter
On my Roll, So . . .

Verse Four

If I Can Manage
Not to Make any Enemies
Why?s Everybody Wonderin?
What?s Gotten into Me
Sounds like It?s Time
For Me to
Go

Instrumental Break for Two Verses

Verse Five

And if The Best You Can Say
Is: ?Here?s Lookin? At You,?
You Clearly Ain?t Likely
To Erect Me a Statue,
So I Reckon I?m
Gonna
Hit the Road

Chorus

Verse Six

Don?t Plan to Take my Picture
Cuz? if you Do
You Won?t be no Richer
Than a Photographing Gal
With a Empty Frame

Verse Seven

Fade Out
Fade to Black
You Can Call it
What You Like
Just Don?t Call Me Back
Cuz? I Plan to Fade
Today

Outro

I?ve Faded
Straightaway
And Right Into
Your Yesterdays
And That?s How
It?s Just Gonna
Have to Stay . . . .
