Eljuri - Biography/Biografia

Cecilia Villar Eljuri, an extremely gifted guitar player, composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist, was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador and raised in the cultural melting-pot of New York City. The press often refers to her as "Carlita" because her soaring electric guitar solos are reminiscent of Carlos Santana's.

"The highlight of the evening was a performance that mixes power pop with Latin music Cecilia Villar Eljuri played big wah-wah guitar lines... the rest of the band spiced the music with hot Santana-flavored samba that set the jampacked room ablaze."-- NEW YORK TIMES

Eljuri is just back from a successful leg of her Universal Truths and Global Rhythms Tour in Mexico DF in support of the release of her album "En Paz" by Intolerancia Records there. Eljuri also played the Cinco de Mayo Festival in Flushing Meadow Park, New York where she was privileged to be the only non-Mexican to perform for 850,000 attendees. Here is a a link to Eljuri's latest MSN video interview on Univision showcasing her live in concert. http://www.univision.com/uv/video/Eljuri/id/1626462103

"En Paz" is a bilingual well crafted 12 song CD that mixes world beat and latin rock. The opening latin reggae track, El Aire, is a special collaboration with the supreme jamaican reggae icons, Sly & Robbie, drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare. With a cool and laid back vibe, the track seems "to float" along roots riddims and Latin-montuno guitar licks. Also appearing on "En Paz" is rock maven Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde) who lends her voice to the flamenco infused Jaula. "En Paz" reached the top 10 and stayed for more than 10 consecutive weeks in the Rock / Latin Alternative chart of Radio & Records Industry Magazine. Also, Eljuri has been a favorite artist for several New World Music Directors of College Radio Stations in the US and Canada that has been reflected in the charts on over 250 radio stations (and Sirius/XM's "The Joint") appearing in the CMJ New Music Report.

Billboard magazine says, Ejuri has "... a sound that electrifies Latin styles...This is rock/dance music at its best." The world is a mix of cultures, attitudes, and perspectives and Eljuri's music is a reflection of that - rumba, flamenco, rock, funk, Ecuadorian pasillo, reggae, Cuban son - strong tribal rhythms blended to support serious lyrical content - steeped in Latin rhythms and lush with groove orientated arrangements. Noche Latina says "She's Joan Jett, PJ Harvey, Julieta Venegas, Tori Amos, and Andrea Echeverri all rolled into one..."
