Hi Robert, "Montreal Express" That's a fine piece of work. Your guitar phrasing is on par or better with Jeff Beck's work on "Blow by Blow". As always I love your guitar tone. Hell, I'll write you 50 songs if you'll just tell me how to get that tone. Excellent work Robert. kenney
Thanks, Kenney. Compared to Jeff Beck "Blow by Blow' = that's ...uh... wow. I saw JB on the Wired tour where he did tunes from Blow by Blow and Wired. Maybe I picked up a little of that, but that's a big mountain to climb. The tone, is a little tricky: It's an Ibanez Prestige guitar modded with DiMarzio Evolution (as in Steve Vai's JEM777), a FU big trem block and noiseless trem springs through a complicated signal chain. How could I not tell you after that JB reference: Compressor - Volume Pedal - Fulltone OD - Highpass filter - Mesa Boogie Dual Recto Amp with 4 x 12 Marshall 2000 speaker cabs - Parametric EQ - Chorus with 6 voices - Stereo Delay = all sim from Fractal Audio Axe FX

By the way I've got a $75.00 Mexicaster a $75. Chinese amp and a used Pod Line 6 that I got off ebay from a pawn shop in Detroit for $75 bucks. So upon further review of your set up, I can see that with just a couple o more toys, I think I might be fairly close to being able to achieve that great tone you have. ;-) Whoo hoo....................... kenney
The ticking and the hiss on the Chinese amp were not extra, that came with the standard package. I think I scored on that deal!!
Well, it's like so many other things in life. The equipment is the veneer, but the real substance is what lies below that. You asked about the tone, but the overall sound comes from a billion hours of playing. My setup for that song or Mexicaster / Chinese amp, ultimately doesn't matter so much as what you're trying to say through it. Like all art, it's about identity, and you do a great job with that.
Thanks Robert, That's quite profound. And your right about the veneer part. All your equipment and that incredible tone wouldn't carry the day without the player and all the hours dedicated to your craft. That's what really shines through in your performances. It's like I always say about song writing. A weak hook really well produced is still a weak hook. A nice studio setup or tons of hi tech equipment can't change that or give it substance that just isn't there.
"Montreal Express"! Wow, as always, just great guitar and production Robert! Love the energy here, and again, as always, your eclectic tastes and most talented ranges, are a delight! Kenney, your set up sounds very familiar to mine; just wish I had mo betta toys! But hey, I'd have to learn how to use them, so, I'm thankful for what it is. It's great to hear everyone's style and sound, as each expresses those moody muses that haunt; all in a state of learning and evolving! Ain't life great!

Hey Jeff - Thanks for the review of my song Seven Waves. That was the funniest review I've ever received. On par with Nathaniel for humor. One of the first songs I recorded, haven't listened to it in a long time, but I think your analysis was on the mark. I think I've gotten better in some areas you mention, and treasure the reference to Leslie West, even though I'm not sure how to take that.
Leslie West is a hellacious guitar player, and he's still active after some major setbacks. It sounded like the bass player on that song was 6'7" 280 ! You've come a long way from that one to Ninth World (which is on my Ipod)!!
He is. He was such a big influence on so many players, too, like Mick Ralphs of Mott the Hoople and Bad Co. I probably had that bass track too high in the mix. That is the fretless bass of Tony Franklin of the Firm, Paul Rogers, Whitesnake etc.
Would you believe Tony Franklin actually commented and said hello on my MySpace page? Back when MySpace actually a good site for meeting and listening.
Roberts I recommend going to the "Fin Kneel" page and listening to "Ambient 60". I think it's pirated sound from Prismatica with a few added beats. I had a song completely pirated today by this person.

It's subjective. I just think the songs need to be considered in context of their application for whatever purpose.

Prismatica, I listened to the first 1:45 minutes and found I lacking as a audio-only experience but this work would be perfect behind a video of any king, abstract, peoples, shadows, etc, but as a pure audio a little too spacey and repetitive, sorry, *** only
Thank you, FIn, for your unsolicited critique. It's not meant to be a song you can hum along to, or sing in the shower. It's ambient music intended for soundtrack. With all due respect, maybe you ought to refrain from giving star ratings for music you only listen to a small portion of, and don't seem to understand the purpose, or application of.
Hi Robert, Thanks for your very positive review of Unlovely and Unloved. While I wrote the tune, lyrics and basic arrangement, I can't claim credit for the performance, which was by a group of British session musicians. So it's more like a demo of the song. But I'm glad you enjoyed it. Just been listening to your Bird in Space, which I liked a lot. Airy with a good infectious rhythm and a strong build. All the best, Ian

Hi Robert, Thanks for the kind review. That one has always been one of my favorites. It's got a nice Celtic sorta feel to it. I suppose I should send it over to Barbwire Tourniquet those boys in Scotland. They've recorded quite of few of my works. They add lyrics a band a vocalist then go into a recording studio and turn some of my mad ramblings into really quite nice songs. Actually quite a few of them get regular airplay over in Europe and the UK. Best part is for the last two years, they keep sending me my percentage of the quarterly royalty payments they receive for the plays. Pretty cool. Thanks, Tommy. Used my 7 string with EMGs for that one, and spent a while figuring out a few tricks in the signal chain to make it fit with the Mesa amp sound. Glad you liked it.
Robert --you know you prompted me to look up a Steve Stevens tune that I used to like about 30, yes 30 yikes, years ago. I couldn't remember the name but found it. It's Daytime Drama. I always thought that rhythm guitar part was so cool. It still is. Funky chord voicings behind the beat over a groove bassline, with some otherwordly sustain and efffects. No wonder you like him too!!
Yes, Jeff. I'm going to look that one up. I don't like to throw around the term "musical genius" too loosely, but I think he's it. Aside from the Top Gun Grammy, he did all that musical director scene for Billy Idol in the Rebel Yell era, did a lot of great work with The Atomic Playboys, Vince Neil, Bozzio and Levin, but what I really think is a zenith album is Memory Crash. Particularly "Small Arms Fire." I have played that tune over and over so many times. He also made a couple tunes for guitar magazines, like Funkcaution and the Christmas song "Can You Hear What I Hear." Unbelievable technical player too. His Flamenco A-gogo album is entirely brilliant.

Hey Jeff - Thanks for the straightforward review of my song "The Aerialist." I really beamed at the Steve Stevens meets Jeff Beck comment, as I'm a big fan of both, particularly SS. I'm kind of pleased with myself for feeling neutral about you saying my guitar is overblown. If I were younger and working on making a career out of it, before the digital age and file sharing removed most money from music, I might be reactive, but hey... I kind of agree with you. No question, there are lots of players who are technically superior, with better articulation, faster, more melodic, etc., but the way I see it - I do what I like (play flashy with a lot of soloing) and cherish the freedom on that. All that said, I'll mention that that song did get a lot of attention from one of the larger licensing opportunities, made it to the "consideration" round, got played something like 15 times, but who knows what that really means. Anyway, I liked that you gave me your true thoughts on it, which I agree with.
Blind reviews are good that way. I still like heavy guitar --it's funny there's a distinct border of tone and style that separates the shred monsters, at least in my mind. But shoot it's just personal taste. I think Jeff Beck and Eric Johnson are the best shred/taste blend, although there are bound to be others I'm not thinking of. It's good to see you back in action --I checked on your page to see when your last log in was because I hadn't see any activity from you in quite a while. Keep up the good work --plenty of your stuff is on my best-of lists, and that's because I want them there!!! :)
Hey Tommy - Just noticed your new tune, 11th Hour. Absolutely love it. Great job getting so creative deep in the funk. I always admired your tone, and that hasn't changed at all. I also heard Georgies Tear. Now THAT's a great tune as well. Very sophisticated and stylish. Reminds me a little of Jeff Beck in the Blow by Blow era. In fact, if that were the added cut on that disc it would have been one of my favorites!! Great work as always.
