“Publicity in the Indie World”

By Rhonda Kelley

I can’t tell you how many times I have received calls from eager managers and bands asking, “So what is it that you actually do? Do you get us on the radio? Can you get our songs played on MTV?” Bands know that having a publicist is a good thing, but they’re not quite sure what it is that we actually do. So, here you go…

A publicist, also called press agent or public relations expert, is in the business of attracting attention for their client. This field of P.R. involves the professional management of a client’s media exposure through interviews and features with key national print publications such as Billboard, Performing Songwriter, Alternative Press, and Relix to name a few, and CD reviews in local fanzines and newspapers as well as the entire indie community on the web. Publicists write bios and press releases as well as coordinate photo shoots.

In today’s music world it is no longer a luxury to have your own publicist; it is a necessity. Every indie band or solo musician needs someone in his or her corner eagerly and aggressively looking for that added exposure to be successful. It is a full-time job especially now that the indie world has exploded and competition is stiff.

But, how do you find an indie publicist? The best way to find a publicist that is right for you is to ask other bands or musicians if they know of anyone or if they have used anyone in the past that they felt did a great job. If you have a good relationship with any writers or editors at music magazines, ask them. They will have great referrals for you. Or simply google: indie publicist.
