Dawn is breaking and the heat of the sun can already be felt. The youngsters of Lomé High School, in the capital of the small Western African country of Togo, hurry rather noisily along the school corridors. At 7am, the bell rings in the playground and the daily apprenticeship of these young human beings begins. For all except one. The child remaining in the school yard sits quietly on an old tree stump and takes up a djembe in his hands. The beating against the skin of this noble instrument resounds now throughout the building, as though the apprenticeship of life were to be done to the rhythm of percussive music." It was when I was traveling here in Lomé in 2009 that I was able to find all the inspiration I needed to continue to write music. When I came back to Europe, I had in my mind a new CD that I would make along with Geoffrey Cormont and Michel Rosciglione, and call it "Keep a safe distance from elephants". The idea of using a string quartet alongside a jazz ensemble had been in my mind for some time, as well as the desire to juxtapose brass instruments too. Which was the reason for inviting Gaël Horellou and Sébastien Llado to meet that task. But above all, what was needed was a meeting of minds, of sparring partners. The great American drummer and composer Ari Hoenig was asked to take up the challenge of this great experience, in the company of the no less talented French pianist, Pierre De Bethmann. The recordings took place in January 2012 in the recording studios in Meudon, the editing and mastering a few months
