Tantz Mit ... The Shtetlblasters

Occupying the fertile creative zone existing between klezmer, electro and funk is Madison's own The Shtetlblasters. Torn between a love for Eastern European Yiddish dance music on the one hand and Prince, The Talking Heads, and glitchy 80s electro on the other, The Shtetlblasters have since the spring of 2008 been honing their particular mish mash of these disparate dance styles. After a year of developing their sound through a residency at the now shuttered Cafe Montmartre, The Shtetlblasters began recording their debut album in the summer of 2009 with Montmartre sound engineer Andrew Hartman and Landon Arkens of The Blueheels. The resulting 10 song album is a free wheeling mix of clarinets, mandolins, blaring synths, vocoders, slap happy bass, and syncopated percussion and electronic drums. Ultimately, The Shtetlblasters aim to create music that will simultaneously make you raise your eyebrow and bob (possibly even bang) your head. Currently, they have made three songs from the album available at http://myspace.com/shtetlblasters.
