As a musician I believe that writing about people around me and my life is the most honest expression I can engage with. Writing protest songs and songs of an existential nature are great but I find them less cathartic and less accessible and communication is one of the most important aspects of music for me. In saying this I endeavoured to write about a period in my life when almost everything happened at once. Leaving behind one era and embracing a new one which included working through issues around me (mostly based on relationships) and getting off drugs, I set out to write a series of songs that encapsulated a moment in time and a period of my development as a person and an artist. I wrote everyday for about six months and came up with about 40 songs that I culled down to a dozen of the most honest. Testing them on my friends at home and then in small venues around Sydney and subsequently as various incarnations of a small band in residencies in Bondi I came up with the album Stereo Gold. I wanted to emulate the lush production of some of my favourite artists such as The Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, Tool and even the Flaming Lips. I decided the easiest way to do this was to work with a producer I respected and set out on the journey of recording my songs with Brett Creswell. Over a period of a year we developed my songs in a calm and transcendent way which gave me the opportunity to experiment with all the ideas and philosophies I have about music and production. The culmination of this is Stereo Gold, an album which I believe is musical and expressive and most importantly, honest. Just a stepping stone on my way to creating an album that is the truest and most important expression of my existence. I am happy and proud to say this is a forward movement in my artistic sojourn.
