A benefit compilation from northern Ghana, Bawku West Collective Vol. 1 features a loose-knit group of musicians recorded live to tape in and around the village of Zebilla. Additional bass, percussion, guitar and kalimba tie together the various performances, while elements of afrobeat, dub and highlife churn under the surface. Urgent and undeniably danceable, it is an album that blurs boundaries between modern and traditional, and engagingly entwines some of northern Ghana's many styles. All proceeds go back to the musicians of the collective and their families.
