Cousin Chris Bio

Cousin Chris is an americana/ambient rock band based in San Francisco. While playing as a drummer in bands for years in San Francisco, New York and Boston, songwriter Chris Schreiber honed his ability to sing and play guitar, focusing primarily on playing slide guitar, and composed melodies that weaved together favorite musical influences. That music became Cousin Chris' debut album Moon Paper.

Moon Paper was recorded in San Francisco, CA at Tiny Telephone Studios between 2007 and 2008. All instruments and vocals were performed by Chris Schreiber. Thanks to John Vanderslice, who is awesome, and owns Tiny Telephone, Chris got to play the studio's really nice Wurlitzer and Grand Piano on the album. Jay Pellicci (Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu) engineered all sessions and Justin Phelps (Cake, The Mars Volta) mixed all songs with the exception of 'Tamara' and '1492' which were mixed by Jay Pellicci. The follow-up acoustic EP Last Year's Youth in G was recorded at Expressions Studios in Emeryville, CA and mixed at Studio 1510 by Leif Shackelford and will be released in early 2009.

Cousin Chris' songs are influenced by the southern blues-style slide guitar work of the The Black Keys, The Allman Brothers Band, Iron & Wine, Ry Cooder, and Son House, as well as the haunting folky stuff by Elliott Smith and Leonard Cohen, and the driving bigness of post-rock instrumental acts like Do Make Say Think, Explosions in the Sky, Octopus Project. But really, where does one even start when they are talking about their influences? Also a fan of the color black and blue skies.
